Overview of My Research
-THE DRIVING CAUSE-
E. coli and its detrimental effects have caused striking issues in our community.
The problem in our community that we investigated was Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria. We plan on examining an effective way to neutralize it from growing by means of silver nanoparticles.
E. coli bacteria is a prokaryote that is usually found in the intestines of healthy animals and people. In fact, E. coli is the most widespread infecting bacteria in its family, enterobacteriaceae. However, some harmful strains exist which can cause a series of medical complications including bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Furthermore, E. coli bacteria has caused numerous casualties in our community. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, “At least 2,000 Americans are hospitalized, and about 60 die as a result of E. coli infection and its complications.” Since E. coli is not preventable until notice, we, as a team, desired to investigate a way to neutralize the effect of E. coli bacteria in our community using the antibacterial properties of silver nanoparticles.
Our goal is to use silver nanoparticles to essentially get rid of harmful E. coli bacteria that could be potentially dangerous to the community. We believe that this problem requires serious consideration, and therefore we will investigate a way to find a conclusive solution.
KEY RESEACH IDEAS
Unlocking Life’s Mysteries

INVESTIGATING E. COLI
With our team members, our experiment proved the use of our powerful tool, silver nanoparticles for use in the identification and characterization of the processes in my model system. A major advantage of this development is its improved effect on neutralization, which allows it to detect subtle dynamic property changes in response to my experimental setup.

CELL CULTURE
Through the observance of the E.coli behavior, we were able to effectively observe and detect the stages in which the E.coli were experiencing significant injuries. Answering questions about this is essential for understanding the mechanistic role it plays on other scientific processes, and for developing tools to further explore this research avenue with more sensitive measurements and improved data collection.

STREAKING
One of the most important sterilization procedures is to swab bacteria to ensure that all procedures are effectively implemented in our project. Swabbing the nutrient agar plates played a crucial role in our experiment. In addition, we were able to effectively see how the silver nanoparticles played a role in our experiment.

SILVER NANOPARTICLES
Silver nanoparticles are quite explanatory- they consist of tiny particles that are beneficial to human beings under certain silver concentrations. Improving the effectivity of these concentrations for not only commercial use - but health issues - aided immensely during our project due to cost-effective, natural benefits.
